It was a cold one in Boston, but we weathered the storm, as did tens of thousands of others, and it was more than worth it.  We are overwhelmed and incredibly grateful that so many people, both new and familiar, came by our booth this year. Our favorite thing about every PAX is seeing our fellow indies sharing a passion for indie games. But of course, while we are there, we’re going to check out what new indie games are looking promising. 😉

Here are some of our favorite new games we saw at PAX East 2017.

Aftercharge

Developed by Chainsawesome Games, Aftercharge is a 3v3 competitive indie shooter where one team is invincible and the other is invisible. The two teams are as such: one is the robotic “

The two teams are as such: one is the robotic “Workonics,” where you use your invisibility to sneak around, collaborate, and dismantle the human encampments by destroying energy extractor points. But the caveat is this: attacking one of these makes you visible, and the human players can kill you very quickly. These human “Guards” are the second team, and as one, you are invincible. Yep, that’s right. Invincible. And your role is to defend the energy extractor points, which are needed for powering up your weapons.

Away: Journey To The Unexpected

Away is a feel-good, colorful first-person adventure game that combines action, negotiation, and rogue-like elements. Venture through the many levels of the story, choose your path, but above all, recruit allies.

All the strange characters you meet in-game can be played in first-person, and it’s up to you to find the right answers to recruit them and join your team!

Switch between your team of characters as you explore different odd characters, mysteries from outer space, and fast-paced combat.

Away is developed by Aurelien Regard, a single-person team who is also responsible for the very vibrant and fast-paced action racing game The Next Penelope. Fun fact: The Next Penelope had it’s own IndieBox back in 2015!

The Artful Escape of Francis Vendetti

Join the story of a teenager who embarks on a multidimensional adventure to inspire his stage persona. The Artful Escape of Francis Vendetti is a video game about great expectations, famous folk singers, lingering shadows, space Gods, hallucinogens, individuality, reptile shops, and wild imaginations.

The debut of release from indie dev Beethoven & Dinosaur can be called “an action, adventure, exploration, narrative driven, musical-laser-light-battle kind of game”.

The Darwin Project

The first game by Scavengers Studios, comprised of devs who’ve been making AAA and indie games for quite some time, Darwin takes a survival core of something like Rust or Don’t Starve, adds in competitive multiplayer, mixes in the themes of stories like Battle Royale and Hunger Games, then combines all of that with the introduction of a Game Master and one-of-a-kind hybrid audience participation.

The Darwin Project takes place in a post-apocalyptic landscape in the Northern Canadian Rockies. The world is on the verge of another ice age, and from all this, a science-experiment/reality TV series is born to give the world hope. The game exposes inmates to the frozen tundra with the slim chance of freedom, if they can survive.

One of the most exciting parts of The Darwin Project, and what makes it like a reality TV show or like The Hunger Games, is the audience participation. Viewers of the game can provide perks to fan-favorites or drop weapons and items into the field, bringing them into the story of that world and opening up untapped possibilities for streamers everywhere.

“We wanted to create a game that heightened the tension and engaged players — and the spectators — in a new way,” said Simon Darveau, the cofounder of Scavengers Studio, in a statement. “Our unique gameplay dynamic and addition of a Show Director mode results in a Battle Royale game closer to The Hunger Games fantasy than ever before. With the show director and audience influencing the outcome, it goes well beyond what’s possible with A.I. alone.”

Keep an eye out for this one, it may be a game changer (pun intended).

Tumbleseed

TumbleSeed is a rolling rogue-like about a small seed with big dreams. Roll up a procedurally generated mountain avoiding holes and defeating corrupted creatures in this dual-stick action balance game. Grow powerful with upgrades, meet new friends and master the art of rolling to reach the peak and save your home.

TumbleSeed features 5 unique worlds, over 30 powers to acquire and master over the course of each run, a daily challenge to compete with your friends or globally including many more surprises, secrets, and adventures.

Our Booth

We had a ton of PAX attendees tell us how much they loved our booth this year, and you know what, we agree with you! IndieBox is all about bringing back the box, but just as important as the box is the contents inside. So this year we put some incredible Collector’s Editions on display, showcasing some examples of epic indie game collectibles from GALAK-Z, Nuclear Throne, The Stanley Parable, and Hue. The response we received from all of you was so encouraging. Seeing our subscribers and fellow indie game lovers freak out about game collectibles is why we do this.

So for PAX East 2017 we wanted to make sure we gave back to our community. That’s why we were giving away free indie games to just about everyone who stopped by. You heard me correctly: FREE. To help spread the love of our Collector’s Editions, we raffled several off at the end of each day. Just by entering our raffle you got a free steam code for an indie game ($15 value), one of several awesome titles we are supporting: (we hope you’re enjoying them!)

Pixel, by C63 Industries.

Bleed, by Bootdisk Revolution

A Normal Lost Phone, by Accidental Queens

Space Jammers, by Spread Shot Studios

Anarcute, by Anarteam

So from the bottom of our indie hearts, we sincerely thank you for being a part of our community and hanging with us at PAX East 2017.
